Southern Banana Pudding

1. In a saucepan, combine milk, sugar, cornstarch, salt, eggs, and egg yolks.
2. Heat over medium heat, whisking almost continuously, until the mixture becomes bubbly and thick.
3. Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla extract until the butter is melted.
4. Cover the pudding mixture with plastic wrap, pressing it onto the surface to prevent a film from forming. Refrigerate until cooled to room temperature.
5. Once cooled, layer 1/2 of the vanilla wafers in a 9″x13″ baking dish, followed by 1 1/2 sliced bananas.
6. Spoon half of the pudding mixture over the bananas, then repeat the layers one more time. Finish with a layer of sliced bananas.
7. Top with whipped topping and sprinkle the reserved crushed vanilla wafers over the top.
8. Refrigerate for at least 2-3 hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld.
