Do not keep these items that belonged to a deceased person

From a spiritual and energetic perspective, keeping certain items of the deceased can sometimes “trap” stagnant energy or prevent the soul (and your own heart) from moving forward. Many traditions suggest that objects closely tied to the physical body or daily suffering carry the heaviest imprints.

Here are 5 types of items often recommended to be released or donated rather than kept:

1. Daily Clothing and Shoes

In many traditions (such as Hinduism and some schools of Feng Shui), clothes are seen as extensions of a person’s aura. Because shoes and clothes were in constant contact with the physical body, they carry “cellular memory” and energy.

  • The Spiritual Logic: Keeping a closet full of clothes can anchor the spirit’s energy to the physical world, making it harder for the soul to transition and for the living to stop living in the past.

2. Bedding and Mattresses

Items like mattresses, pillows, and bedsheets are thought to absorb the energy of the person’s final days, especially if there was a long illness.

  • The Spiritual Logic: Sleep is a state of vulnerability where we release a lot of energy. Keeping a mattress associated with the pain or passing of a loved one can invite heavy, “melancholy” vibrations into your own rest space.

3. “Dead” or Broken Objects

Keeping items that the deceased used which are now broken—like a stopped watch, a cracked mirror, or a non-functional radio—is often considered spiritually draining.

  • The Spiritual Logic: Broken objects represent “stagnant Chi” or blocked energy. Spiritually, they symbolize a life that has stopped moving, which can create a “haunting” or heavy atmosphere in a home.

4. Personal Hygiene Items

Things like toothbrushes, hairbrushes, or half-used bottles of perfume/makeup are deeply personal and tied to the physical maintenance of the body.

  • The Spiritual Logic: These items hold no “ancestral” value but carry a very high concentration of physical DNA and personal residue. Most spiritual guides suggest these should be disposed of immediately to allow the energy to clear.

5. Wallets and Purses (If Kept “Loaded”)

While the wallet itself might be a keepsake, keeping it exactly as they left it—with old receipts, expired cards, and scraps of paper—is often advised against.

  • The Spiritual Logic: These represent the “worldly burdens” and material attachments of the person. By keeping their “unfinished business” in your home, you may subconsciously take on their old stresses or financial energies.

A Note on Mementos: Spiritually, the goal isn’t to erase the person, but to clear the physical density they left behind. It is generally encouraged to keep high-vibration items like photos, jewelry, or favorite books, as these focus on the spirit and the “story” of the person rather than their physical decay or daily chores.
